About Ditropan

Overview

Ditropan XL contains oxybutynin chloride, an anticholinergic and antispasmodic medicine. It treats overactive bladder symptoms, including a sudden need to urinate, frequent urination and leakage associated with urgency. It is also used in children aged 6 years and older for bladder muscle overactivity linked to a neurological condition, such as spina bifida. It works by reducing involuntary bladder muscle spasms.

What it treats

- Overactive bladder with a sudden urge to urinate, frequent urination, or urine leakage associated with urgency. - Bladder muscle overactivity associated with a neurological condition, such as spina bifida, in children aged 6 years and older.

Safety information

Before taking this medicine

Do not take this medicine if you have, or are at risk of, urinary retention (being unable to empty your bladder), gastric retention (the stomach not emptying properly), other conditions that severely slow movement through the stomach or intestines, or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma. Do not take it if you are allergic to oxybutynin or any other ingredient in the product.

Interactions

Oxybutynin can interact with other medicines that have anticholinergic effects, including some antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics and medicines for Parkinson’s disease. Taking them together may increase dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, drowsiness or difficulty passing urine. Some antifungal medicines, such as ketoconazole and itraconazole, and certain antibiotics, such as clarithromycin, can increase oxybutynin levels and side effects. Oxybutynin may also oppose the effects of medicines such as donepezil, used for dementia, and metoclopramide, used for nausea and stomach-emptying problems. Alcohol can increase drowsiness. Sleeping medicines and other medicines that cause sedation may worsen this effect. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, herbal products and supplements you take before starting Ditropan or changing other treatments.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
