About Cubicin
Overview
Cubicin contains daptomycin, an antibiotic given into a vein. It treats complicated skin and underlying tissue infections and Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections in adults and children aged 1 to 17 years, including right-sided infective endocarditis in adults. It is not indicated for pneumonia or left-sided infective endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It works by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, stopping essential processes and causing the bacteria to die.
What it treats
- Complicated skin and skin structure infections in adults and children aged 1–17 years. - Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections (bacteremia) in adults and children aged 1–17 years, including infections involving the inner lining or valves on the right side of the heart (right-sided infective endocarditis) in adults.

Side effects
Common side effects reported in adults treated for complicated skin infections include diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, abnormal liver blood tests, increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK, a muscle enzyme), urinary tract infections, low blood pressure and shortness of breath. In children treated for these infections, common effects include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, itching, fever, increased CPK and headache. In adults treated for Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections or endocarditis, commonly reported adverse reactions include sepsis, bacteria in the blood, abdominal or chest pain, swelling, throat pain, itching, increased sweating, difficulty sleeping, increased CPK and high blood pressure. In children treated for these bloodstream infections, vomiting and increased CPK were common. Serious reactions require prompt medical attention. These include potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, muscle injury or breakdown (myopathy or rhabdomyolysis), lung inflammation called eosinophilic pneumonia, a serious drug reaction called DRESS, kidney inflammation and peripheral nerve damage. Contact a doctor promptly about muscle pain or weakness, shortness of breath, or diarrhea, which may be associated with Clostridioides difficile infection. The label also reports increased INR or prolonged prothrombin time, which are blood-clotting test results. CPK levels and signs of muscle or nerve problems should be monitored during treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Cubicin if you have a known allergy to daptomycin. It should be avoided in children younger than 12 months because of possible effects on the nervous system and muscles. Conditions requiring caution include muscle pain or weakness, peripheral nerve problems and reduced kidney function. Monitoring includes blood tests for creatine phosphokinase (CPK), a marker of muscle damage, and checks for muscle or nerve symptoms. Reduced effectiveness has been observed in adults with moderately impaired kidney function. Serious reactions include life-threatening allergic reactions, muscle injury or breakdown, eosinophilic pneumonia (a type of lung inflammation), DRESS (a serious drug reaction affecting the body) and kidney inflammation. These may require treatment to be stopped and appropriate medical care. Diarrhea during treatment needs assessment for Clostridioides difficile infection. Persistent or returning Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream or heart valve infection requires further testing and investigation.
