About Crixivan
Overview
Crixivan contains indinavir, an HIV protease inhibitor. It is used with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV infection. It works by blocking an enzyme HIV needs to form infectious virus particles, causing the virus to produce immature particles that cannot infect cells.
What it treats
Treatment of HIV infection in combination with other antiretroviral medicines.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Crixivan if you have a clinically significant allergy to indinavir or any of its other ingredients. Do not take Crixivan with alfuzosin, amiodarone, dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, ergotamine, methylergonovine, cisapride, lovastatin, simvastatin, pimozide, oral midazolam, triazolam or alprazolam. It must also not be taken with Revatio (sildenafil) used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. Crixivan can increase blood levels of these medicines, potentially causing serious or life-threatening reactions.
Interactions
Crixivan (indinavir) can affect how the liver breaks down other medicines, increasing their blood levels and potentially their effects or side effects. Other medicines can also raise or lower indinavir levels. Discuss these interactions with your doctor: • Rifampin, rifabutin, efavirenz and St. John’s wort can lower indinavir levels. Crixivan can also increase rifabutin levels. • Ritonavir can substantially increase indinavir levels, and Crixivan can increase ritonavir levels. • Delavirdine slows the breakdown of indinavir. Clarithromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole and fluconazole can also affect indinavir levels. Crixivan can increase clarithromycin levels. • Crixivan can substantially increase exposure to sildenafil and saquinavir. • Crixivan can increase levels of the contraceptive hormones ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone. • Grapefruit juice reduced indinavir exposure in an interaction study. Tell your doctor about the medicines and supplements you take, including St. John’s wort, and whether you drink grapefruit juice. Any changes to treatment should be decided by your prescriber.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
