About Cosopt

Overview

Cosopt is an eye drop medicine containing dorzolamide and timolol. It is used to lower raised pressure inside the eye in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension when beta-blocker treatment has not lowered the pressure enough. Both ingredients work by reducing the amount of fluid produced inside the eye, helping to lower eye pressure.

What it treats

- Elevated eye pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension when beta-blockers alone have not lowered eye pressure enough.

Safety information

Side effects

The most commonly reported side effects are a bitter, sour or unusual taste and burning or stinging in the eyes, reported in up to 30% of patients. Eye redness, blurred vision, inflammation of the eye’s surface and itchy eyes were reported in 5–15% of patients. Contact a doctor promptly for breathing problems, worsening asthma, heart failure, allergic reactions or increased muscle weakness. Allergic reactions may include sensitivity to sulfonamides, and reactions to allergens may become stronger. This medicine can also hide warning signs of low blood sugar in people with diabetes and signs of an overactive thyroid.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for trouble breathing or worsening asthma. - Seek medical attention immediately for severe or worsening muscle weakness.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Cosopt if you have asthma or a history of asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a slow heartbeat (sinus bradycardia), second- or third-degree heart block, overt heart failure, cardiogenic shock, or an allergy to any ingredient. Conditions requiring caution include other obstructive lung disease, sulfonamide allergy, increased sensitivity to allergens, muscle weakness, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, and kidney or liver impairment. The label warns of worsening breathing reactions, including asthma, heart failure, and increased muscle weakness. It may also mask symptoms of low blood sugar or an overactive thyroid. Tell your doctor if you are due to have surgery, as it can impair certain reflex responses during surgery.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: - Oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: effects may add to those of Cosopt, with potential disturbances in the body’s acid–base and electrolyte balance. - Systemic beta-blockers: beta-blocking effects throughout the body may be increased. - Calcium antagonists taken by mouth or given intravenously: combined use may cause problems with the heart’s electrical conduction, left-sided heart failure or low blood pressure. - Catecholamine-depleting medicines: combined effects may cause low blood pressure or a markedly slow heartbeat. - Digitalis or calcium antagonists: combined effects may slow electrical conduction through the heart. - CYP2D6 inhibitors: these may increase beta-blocking effects throughout the body.

Using Cosopt

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C away from direct light. Once opened, follow the in-use period printed on the pack and do not let the dropper touch the eye or any surface. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
