About Ciloxan
Overview
Ciloxan contains ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, an eye infection caused by certain bacteria. It works by acting against bacteria that are sensitive to ciprofloxacin.
What it treats
Bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, viridans group streptococci or Haemophilus influenzae.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include eye discomfort and problems affecting the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. Less frequently reported effects include blurred or reduced vision, dry eyes, eye pain, redness, irritation, swelling, itching, watering, sensitivity to light, and a feeling that something is in the eye. Changes to the eye’s surface, eye inflammation and eyelid redness have also been reported. Other effects include skin inflammation, nausea and altered taste. Allergic reactions have also been reported. Contact a doctor if you develop an allergic reaction, reduced vision, eye pain or swelling.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Ciloxan if you have a history of an allergic reaction to ciprofloxacin or any other ingredient in the medicine. If you have had an allergic reaction to another quinolone antibiotic, tell your prescriber before use, as Ciloxan may also be unsuitable for you.
Interactions
Specific interaction studies have not been conducted with ciprofloxacin used in the eye. Some quinolone antibiotics given systemically have been shown to increase theophylline levels, slow caffeine breakdown, strengthen the effects of warfarin and related blood thinners, and temporarily raise blood creatinine levels when taken with cyclosporine. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines, and discuss your caffeine intake. These interactions have not been established for ophthalmic ciprofloxacin.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place with the bottle tightly closed, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
