About Cholbam
Overview
Cholbam is a prescription medicine containing cholic acid, a bile acid, in capsules. It treats bile acid synthesis disorders caused by single enzyme defects. It is also used as an add-on treatment for peroxisomal disorders, including Zellweger spectrum disorders, in patients with signs of liver disease, fatty stools or complications from reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Cholic acid helps bile flow, fat digestion and vitamin absorption, although its exact role in treating these disorders is not fully understood.
What it treats
- Bile acid synthesis disorders caused by single enzyme defects. - As an additional treatment for peroxisomal disorders, including Zellweger spectrum disorders, in patients with signs of liver disease, fatty stools, or complications from reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Safety and effectiveness for manifestations of these disorders outside the liver have not been established.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, inflammation of the food pipe caused by acid reflux, feeling generally unwell, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), skin lesions, nausea, abdominal pain, intestinal polyps, urinary tract infections, and peripheral nerve problems. Cholbam can worsen liver impairment. Contact your doctor if you develop jaundice or are told that your liver function has worsened. Liver function must be monitored during treatment, and Cholbam must be discontinued if it worsens.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications to Cholbam. However, liver impairment may worsen during treatment. Liver function must be monitored, and Cholbam must be discontinued if liver function worsens.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take cyclosporine or another bile salt efflux pump (BSEP) inhibitor. Use with Cholbam should be avoided. If both are necessary, your doctor should monitor liver enzymes and bilirubin through blood tests. Bile acid binding resins and aluminum-based antacids must be taken separately from Cholbam. Ask your doctor how to space these medicines apart.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
