About Actigall

Overview

Actigall is a prescription medicine containing ursodeoxycholic acid, a bile acid. It is used to dissolve certain cholesterol gallstones and to treat primary biliary cholangitis, a condition that damages the liver’s small bile ducts. It works by reducing cholesterol in bile and helping protect liver cells from the harmful effects of other bile acids.

What it treats

Selected non-calcified cholesterol gallstones when gallbladder surgery is unsuitable. Prevention of gallstones during rapid weight loss. Primary biliary cholangitis, a chronic disease affecting the small bile ducts in the liver.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects of ursodeoxycholic acid include diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal discomfort or pain. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe or persistent, or if you develop severe abdominal pain or a new rash. Serious allergic reactions can occur. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing.

When to call your doctor

- Get medical help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or fainting. - Seek immediate medical attention for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, especially with fever, chills or vomiting. - Seek immediate medical attention for new or worsening yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Actigall if you are allergic to ursodeoxycholic acid or any other ingredient in the medicine, have a blocked bile duct, or have acute inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts. For gallstone treatment, it should not be used if the stones are calcified, the gallbladder does not function properly, or you have frequent attacks of gallstone pain. Advanced liver disease, particularly decompensated cirrhosis, requires specialist assessment and close monitoring. Liver function should be monitored during treatment. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, discuss treatment with your prescriber before taking this medicine.

Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you take. Important interactions with ursodeoxycholic acid include: - Cholestyramine, colestipol and aluminium-containing antacids can reduce its absorption. Your pharmacist can advise whether these need to be taken at separate times. - Ciclosporin levels may change. Your doctor may need to monitor blood levels and adjust treatment. - Oestrogen-containing medicines, including some contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies, and certain cholesterol-lowering medicines such as clofibrate can increase cholesterol in bile and may reduce its ability to dissolve gallstones. Do not stop prescribed medicines or change contraception without medical advice.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
