About Bactroban
Overview
Bactroban is a prescription antibacterial ointment containing mupirocin. It treats impetigo caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria that are sensitive to mupirocin. It works by blocking a bacterial enzyme called RNA synthetase.
What it treats
Impetigo caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include burning, stinging, pain and itching. Severe allergic reactions have been reported, including anaphylaxis, hives, swelling and a widespread rash. Seek urgent medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Stop using the ointment and contact a doctor if you develop an allergic skin reaction or severe irritation at the application site. Contact a doctor if diarrhea occurs, as it needs assessment for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of microorganisms not affected by the medicine, including fungi. Avoid contact with the eyes, as the ointment can cause eye irritation.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Bactroban ointment if you are allergic to mupirocin or any of its ingredients. Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not use it inside the nose or on other mucous membranes, with intravenous cannulae, or at central intravenous sites. Use at intravenous sites may promote fungal infections and antimicrobial resistance. The ointment contains polyethylene glycol. Do not use it where large amounts of this ingredient could be absorbed, especially if you have moderate or severe kidney impairment. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, hives, swelling and widespread rash, have been reported. Stop use if an allergic reaction or severe irritation develops. Diarrhea during treatment requires assessment for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Prolonged use may allow organisms not affected by mupirocin, including fungi, to overgrow.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C with the cap closed, away from direct light and heat. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
