About Avelox
Overview
Avelox tablets contain moxifloxacin, a prescription antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone group. It is used in adults aged 18 and older to treat certain bacterial infections, including community-acquired pneumonia, skin infections, complicated infections within the abdomen and plague. It is also indicated for acute bacterial sinusitis and bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. It works against bacteria that are susceptible to moxifloxacin.
What it treats
For adults aged 18 years and older, to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria: - Community-acquired pneumonia - Uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections - Complicated infections within the abdomen - Plague - Acute bacterial sinusitis - Acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache and dizziness. Serious side effects include tendon inflammation or rupture, nerve damage, and effects on the brain and nervous system. These can be disabling and potentially irreversible. Other serious risks include worsening of myasthenia gravis, changes in blood sugar, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and changes in the heart’s electrical rhythm (QT prolongation), including a potentially dangerous abnormal rhythm called torsade de pointes. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop signs of a serious reaction. Serious allergic reactions, including potentially fatal anaphylaxis, can occur after the first or later doses. Stop taking moxifloxacin and seek medical help immediately at the first sign of a skin rash, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or another sign of an allergic reaction. Diarrhea may be a sign of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, a serious side effect. Contact a doctor if diarrhea occurs.

When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Avelox (moxifloxacin) if you have ever had an allergic reaction to moxifloxacin or another quinolone antibiotic. It should be avoided in people with a known prolonged QT interval (an abnormality of the heart’s electrical rhythm), a clinically significant slow heartbeat, an acute reduction in blood flow to the heart, or low blood potassium or magnesium. It should also be avoided with medicines that prolong the QT interval. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, as animal studies suggest moxifloxacin may harm the unborn baby. Older adults have a higher risk of severe tendon problems, especially when also taking corticosteroids, and a higher risk of QT prolongation. Serious, sometimes fatal allergic reactions can occur after the first or later doses. Stop taking this medicine and seek medical help at the first sign of a rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or another sign of an allergic reaction. Seek medical assessment if diarrhea occurs, as it may be associated with Clostridium difficile infection.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take antacids, sucralfate or multivitamins containing minerals. These products can reduce moxifloxacin absorption and need to be taken separately; ask your doctor or pharmacist about timing. Moxifloxacin can increase warfarin’s blood-thinning effect. Blood-clotting tests (prothrombin time/INR) and monitoring for bleeding are needed. Avoid taking moxifloxacin with Class IA or Class III antiarrhythmics, medicines used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, because the combination may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms. If you take diabetes medicines, blood glucose should be monitored carefully.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
