About Avastin

Overview

Avastin contains bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody supplied in a vial for intravenous use. It treats certain colorectal, lung, kidney, cervical, ovarian, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal and liver cancers, as well as recurrent glioblastoma in adults. Depending on the cancer and treatment setting, it is used alone or with other cancer medicines. It blocks VEGF, a protein involved in forming new blood vessels.

What it treats

Metastatic colorectal cancer, with chemotherapy as first- or second-line treatment, including certain second-line regimens after progression on bevacizumab-containing treatment. Not indicated for adjuvant treatment of colon cancer. Non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer that is unresectable, locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic, with carboplatin and paclitaxel as first-line treatment. Recurrent glioblastoma in adults. Metastatic renal cell carcinoma, with interferon alfa. Persistent, recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer, with specified chemotherapy combinations. Epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer: stage III or IV disease after initial surgery, platinum-sensitive recurrent disease, or platinum-resistant recurrent disease after no more than two prior chemotherapy regimens. Used with specified chemotherapy, with Avastin continued alone in some settings. Unresectable or metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma, with atezolizumab, in patients who have not received prior systemic therapy.

Side effects

Common side effects of Avastin (bevacizumab), reported in more than 10% of patients, include nosebleeds, headache, high blood pressure, nasal inflammation, protein in the urine, changes in taste, dry skin, bleeding, problems with tear production, back pain and peeling skin. Contact a doctor immediately for serious side effects, including severe bleeding, holes or abnormal connections in the stomach or intestines, wound-healing complications, blood clots in arteries or veins, dangerously high blood pressure, kidney injury, severe infusion-related reactions or heart failure. Bleeding can be fatal. Other serious risks include posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (a brain condition), ovarian failure and necrotizing fasciitis (a severe tissue infection). Blood pressure and urine protein need monitoring during treatment. Avastin may harm an unborn baby; effective contraception is needed for patients who could become pregnant.

- Seek medical attention immediately for severe bleeding or coughing up blood. - Seek medical attention immediately if a surgical wound is not healing properly.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The FDA label lists no formal contraindications for Avastin. However, it should not be given to people who have recently coughed up blood. Avastin requires caution because it can cause serious or fatal bleeding, holes in the stomach or intestines, abnormal connections between organs, blood clots in arteries or veins, and wound-healing complications. It must be withheld for at least 28 days before elective surgery and for at least 28 days after major surgery, and until wounds have adequately healed. The safety of restarting it after a wound-healing complication has resolved is not established. Blood pressure and urine protein must be monitored. Uncontrolled high blood pressure or significant protein in the urine may require treatment to be withheld. Serious complications, including severe bleeding or blood clots, hypertensive crisis, certain brain conditions such as posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), nephrotic syndrome, severe infusion reactions, or congestive heart failure, require treatment to be stopped. Avastin may harm an unborn baby. Effective contraception is needed for females who can become pregnant. It may also cause ovarian failure. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
