About Alecensa
Overview
Alecensa (alectinib hydrochloride) is a prescription cancer medicine available as capsules. It is used in adults after surgery to remove ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer when the tumor was at least 4 cm or involved lymph nodes, and to treat ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. An FDA-approved test is used to confirm that the cancer is ALK-positive. It works by blocking the activity of proteins called kinases, including ALK, that help cancer cells grow and survive.
What it treats
- ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in adults after surgery to remove the tumor, when the tumor is at least 4 cm or cancer has spread to lymph nodes. - ALK-positive NSCLC in adults when the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body (metastatic disease). For both uses, ALK-positive status must be confirmed by an FDA-approved test.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Alecensa include liver toxicity, constipation, tiredness, muscle pain, swelling, rash and cough. Serious side effects include liver injury, lung inflammation, kidney problems, a slow heartbeat, severe muscle pain with raised levels of the muscle enzyme CPK, and anemia caused by the breakdown of red blood cells. Severely raised blood triglycerides can lead to inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Contact your doctor if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, or if any of these serious effects are suspected or identified. Your doctor will monitor liver function, kidney function as needed, heart rate, blood pressure, CPK and triglycerides. Alecensa can also harm an unborn baby. If you could become pregnant, use effective contraception during treatment and contact your doctor if you become pregnant.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The FDA label lists no contraindications for Alecensa. However, it can cause serious liver injury, lung inflammation, kidney problems, a slow heart rate, severe muscle pain or muscle enzyme elevations, anemia caused by the breakdown of red blood cells, and severely raised triglycerides that can lead to pancreatitis. These problems may require treatment to be paused, adjusted or stopped by the prescriber. Monitoring includes liver blood tests, heart rate, blood pressure, muscle enzyme levels and triglycerides. Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness to your prescriber. Alecensa can harm an unborn baby. Females who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
