Before taking this medicine

The FDA label lists no formal contraindications for Akeega. However, use should be avoided in people with moderate or severe liver impairment. Akeega requires caution and monitoring in people with high blood pressure, low blood potassium, fluid retention or heart conditions that could be worsened by these effects. High blood pressure and low potassium should be controlled before and during treatment. Serious risks include reduced blood cell counts, myelodysplastic syndrome or acute myeloid leukemia (bone marrow and blood cancers), severe or fatal liver injury, and adrenal insufficiency. Blood counts and liver function need monitoring. Treatment must be stopped if myelodysplastic syndrome, acute myeloid leukemia or posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), a neurological condition, is confirmed. People with diabetes need blood glucose monitoring, particularly if taking pioglitazone, other thiazolidinediones or repaglinide, because severe low blood sugar has been reported with abiraterone acetate. Akeega with prednisone is not recommended in combination with radium Ra 223 dichloride because of increased fractures and deaths. Akeega can harm an unborn baby. Men with female partners who could become pregnant should use effective contraception.
