About ADVATE
Overview
ADVATE contains antihemophilic factor (recombinant) and is used in children and adults with hemophilia A, an inherited factor VIII deficiency. It is used to control and prevent bleeding, manage bleeding around surgery, and help prevent or reduce bleeding episodes through routine preventive treatment. It works by temporarily replacing the missing factor VIII needed for blood to clot effectively. ADVATE is not indicated for treating von Willebrand disease.
What it treats
- Control and prevention of bleeding episodes in children and adults with hemophilia A (congenital factor VIII deficiency). - Management of bleeding around surgery in people with hemophilia A. - Routine preventive treatment to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in people with hemophilia A. ADVATE is not indicated for treating von Willebrand disease.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects reported in clinical trials included fever, headache, cough, inflammation of the nose and throat, joint pain, vomiting, upper respiratory tract infection, limb injury, nasal congestion and diarrhea. Serious side effects include allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Reactions may occur to trace amounts of mouse or hamster protein in ADVATE. Stop treatment and seek urgent medical attention if an allergic reaction occurs. Antibodies called factor VIII inhibitors may develop and reduce the treatment’s effect. Contact your doctor if bleeding is not controlled. Blood tests may be needed to check for inhibitors, and alternative treatment may be required.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use ADVATE if you have had a life-threatening allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to mouse or hamster proteins or any of its other ingredients: mannitol, trehalose, sodium chloride, histidine, Tris, calcium chloride, polysorbate 80 or glutathione. Severe allergic reactions can occur during treatment. ADVATE contains trace amounts of mouse and hamster proteins. If symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, stop treatment and seek medical help immediately. Antibodies that block factor VIII activity (inhibitors) may develop. If expected factor VIII levels are not reached or bleeding is not controlled, testing for inhibitors is needed. Children clear ADVATE faster per kilogram of body weight than adults, so the prescriber may need to adjust treatment.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
