Abilify Maintena

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Abilify Maintena if you have a known allergy to aripiprazole. Reported allergic reactions include itching, hives and anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. Conditions requiring caution include: • Dementia-related psychosis in older adults, because of an increased risk of stroke or transient ischaemic attack, including fatal events. • Heart or blood vessel disease, including disease affecting circulation to the brain, because of the risk of a fall in blood pressure when standing. • Diabetes or risk factors for diabetes. Regular blood glucose checks are recommended. Increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger or weakness may signal high blood glucose. • A history of significantly low white blood cell or neutrophil counts. Blood count monitoring is needed. • A history of seizures or conditions that increase seizure risk. Other important warnings include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which requires immediate discontinuation and close monitoring, and tardive dyskinesia, which may require discontinuation if clinically appropriate. New gambling urges or other compulsive behaviours may require the prescriber to adjust or stop treatment. Changes in blood fats and weight gain can occur; weight monitoring is recommended. Use caution when operating machinery because thinking and movement may be impaired. Exposure during the third trimester of pregnancy may cause abnormal movements or withdrawal symptoms in newborns. During breastfeeding, the infant should be monitored for dehydration and inadequate weight gain.
