About Zetia

Overview

Zetia is a prescription tablet containing ezetimibe, a cholesterol absorption inhibitor. It is used alongside diet to lower elevated LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults with certain cholesterol disorders, usually with other cholesterol-lowering medicines, and with a statin in children aged 10 years and older with certain inherited cholesterol disorders. It is also used alongside diet to reduce elevated plant sterols in adults and children aged 9 years and older with homozygous familial sitosterolemia. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the small intestine.

What it treats

- Primary hyperlipidemia, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), in adults: to lower elevated LDL cholesterol alongside diet, with a statin or alone when additional LDL-lowering treatment is not possible. - HeFH in children aged 10 years and older: to lower elevated LDL cholesterol with a statin and diet. - Mixed hyperlipidemia in adults: to lower elevated LDL cholesterol with fenofibrate and diet. - Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) in adults and children aged 10 years and older: to lower elevated LDL cholesterol with a statin and other LDL-lowering treatments. - Homozygous familial sitosterolemia in adults and children aged 9 years and older: to lower elevated sitosterol and campesterol levels alongside diet.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects reported with Zetia taken alone include upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, joint pain, sinus infections, pain in the arms or legs, tiredness and flu. When taken with a statin, common side effects also include nose and throat inflammation, muscle pain and back pain. Serious side effects include raised liver enzymes and muscle disorders, including myopathy and rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). Contact your doctor promptly if you develop muscle pain or weakness. Most reported cases of rhabdomyolysis occurred in people also taking a statin or another medicine associated with this risk, such as a fibrate. Your doctor may check your liver enzymes and consider stopping Zetia if significant elevations persist.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for unexplained muscle pain, which may signal serious muscle injury or breakdown.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Zetia if you are allergic to ezetimibe or any of its other ingredients. Reported allergic reactions include anaphylaxis, swelling beneath the skin (angioedema), rash and hives. If Zetia is used with a statin, fenofibrate or another LDL-cholesterol-lowering medicine, you must also be able to take that medicine safely. Its contraindications, warnings and precautions also apply. Zetia can raise liver enzyme levels. Your clinician should check liver enzymes when clinically indicated and may stop treatment if significant increases persist. Zetia may cause muscle damage, including severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). Most reported cases of rhabdomyolysis involved people also taking a statin or another medicine associated with this risk, such as a fibrate. If muscle damage is suspected, Zetia and other relevant medicines should be stopped as appropriate.

Interactions

Cyclosporine: Taking Zetia with cyclosporine increases exposure to both medicines. The increase in ezetimibe exposure may be greater in people with severe kidney impairment. Your doctor should monitor cyclosporine levels and weigh the benefits and risks of using these medicines together. Fibrates: Using Zetia with fibrates other than fenofibrate is not recommended. Both fenofibrate and ezetimibe may increase cholesterol in bile, which can lead to gallstones. If gallstones are suspected while taking both medicines, your doctor should arrange gallbladder tests and consider an alternative cholesterol-lowering treatment. Bile acid sequestrants: Cholestyramine reduces exposure to ezetimibe and may make Zetia less effective. If you take a bile acid sequestrant, ask your doctor how to separate it from Zetia.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
