About Zemuron
Overview
Zemuron contains rocuronium bromide, a neuromuscular blocking medicine given by injection into a vein. It is used alongside general anesthesia to help place a breathing tube and relax skeletal muscles during surgery or mechanical ventilation. It works by blocking nerve signals at the point where nerves communicate with muscles, allowing the muscles to relax.
What it treats
- To help place a breathing tube during general anesthesia, including rapid-sequence and routine intubation. - To relax skeletal muscles during surgery or mechanical ventilation, as an adjunct to general anesthesia.
Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects reported in clinical trials were temporary low or high blood pressure (2%). Serious side effects include a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), paralysis that persists after use, muscle disease (myopathy), and increased resistance to blood flow through the lungs. These require immediate medical attention. Tell the treating doctor or medical team immediately if any are suspected.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Zemuron must not be given to anyone with a known allergy to rocuronium bromide or other neuromuscular blocking agents. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported, and people allergic to one neuromuscular blocking agent may react to another. It must be given with adequate anesthesia or sedation, and only where equipment for inserting a breathing tube, mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy, along with medicine to reverse its effects, is immediately available. Accidental administration can be fatal. Paralysis may persist; a reversal medicine should be considered when this risk is higher. Rocuronium is not recommended for rapid sequence induction of anesthesia in patients undergoing a Cesarean section, or for rapid sequence intubation in children. In children, the onset and duration of its effects vary with age, the amount given and the anesthetic technique.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take antibiotics, anticonvulsants, quinidine, procainamide, lithium or magnesium, including magnesium supplements. Certain antibiotics, quinidine, procainamide, lithium and magnesium may increase rocuronium’s muscle-relaxing effects. Anticonvulsants may reduce its effects. Inhaled anesthetics and local anesthetics may also increase its effects. Interactions with other nondepolarizing muscle relaxants have been observed. Giving rocuronium before succinylcholine has not been studied.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
