About Zantac
Overview
Zantac contains ranitidine, a histamine H2-receptor blocker. It is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and erosive esophagitis, and to maintain healing of ulcers and erosive esophagitis. It also treats conditions involving excessive stomach acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by blocking a type of histamine receptor called the H2 receptor.
What it treats
- Active duodenal ulcers and maintenance treatment after healing. - Active benign (non-cancerous) stomach ulcers and maintenance treatment after healing. - Conditions causing excessive stomach acid production, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and systemic mastocytosis. - Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). - Erosive esophagitis diagnosed by endoscopy, and maintenance of healing.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include headache, which can be severe, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain or discomfort. The label does not establish how common these effects are. In many cases, it is unclear whether ranitidine caused the reported effects. Rarely reported effects include dizziness, tiredness or feeling unwell, sleepiness, difficulty sleeping, a spinning sensation, blurred vision, joint or muscle pain, and hair loss. Breast enlargement or milk discharge has also been reported rarely. Impotence and reduced sexual desire have been reported, but no more often than in the general population. Serious reported effects that warrant medical attention include: • Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, airway narrowing and swelling beneath the skin. Seek immediate medical help for these reactions. • Liver inflammation, with or without jaundice, and rare cases of liver failure. The label states that ranitidine should be stopped immediately if liver inflammation occurs. Rare deaths have been reported. • Rare abnormal heart rhythms, including unusually fast or slow heartbeats. • Rare inflammation of the pancreas or kidneys. • Blood cell changes, including low white blood cells or platelets, and rare severe blood disorders. • Rare confusion, agitation, depression, hallucinations or involuntary movements. Mental effects were reported mainly in severely ill older patients. • Rash, including rare erythema multiforme, and rare inflammation of blood vessels. A study suggested an increased risk of pneumonia in people currently taking medicines in ranitidine’s class, but a causal link has not been established.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Do not take Zantac (ranitidine) if you are allergic to ranitidine or any of the medicine’s ingredients.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
