Yasmin

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Yasmin if you have kidney impairment, adrenal insufficiency, unexplained abnormal uterine bleeding, current or previous breast cancer, liver disease or a liver tumour. Do not use it with hepatitis C medicines containing ombitasvir and paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir, because liver enzymes may rise. Yasmin must not be used if you are at high risk of blood clots, heart attack or stroke. This includes people who: • Smoke and are over 35. • Have or have previously had a deep vein blood clot or a blood clot in the lungs. • Have disease affecting the blood vessels in the brain or coronary arteries. • Have heart valve or heart rhythm disorders that increase clot risk, or inherited or acquired blood-clotting disorders. • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure, high blood pressure with blood vessel disease, or diabetes with blood vessel disease. • Have headaches with specific neurological symptoms, or are over 35 and have migraines with or without aura. Yasmin may carry a higher risk of blood clots in the veins than combined contraceptives containing levonorgestrel or some other progestins. It must be stopped if a blood clot occurs. Planned major surgery and recent childbirth require assessment of when it is safe to use. Do not use Yasmin if you are prone to high potassium levels. If you take long-term medicines that can increase potassium, blood potassium should be checked during the first treatment cycle. Prediabetes or diabetes requires monitoring. Another contraceptive method may be considered if blood fat levels are not controlled. Stop Yasmin if jaundice develops. Significant changes in headaches, irregular bleeding or absent periods need medical assessment. Yasmin can reduce milk production during breastfeeding.
