About Xyzal
Overview
Xyzal contains levocetirizine, an antihistamine. It is used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis and to treat uncomplicated skin symptoms of chronic hives with no known cause. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors involved in allergic symptoms.
What it treats
- Seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis, to relieve allergy symptoms. - Chronic idiopathic urticaria (persistent hives with no known cause), to treat uncomplicated skin symptoms.

Side effects
Common side effects reported with Xyzal vary by age: - Ages 12 years and older: sleepiness, tiredness, dry mouth, sore throat, and cold-like symptoms affecting the nose and throat. - Ages 6 to 12 years: fever, sleepiness, cough, and nosebleeds. - Ages 1 to 5 years: fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and middle ear infections. - Ages 6 to 11 months: diarrhea and constipation. Weakness has also been associated with Xyzal. Sleepiness can affect your alertness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or other hazardous activities requiring full mental alertness while taking Xyzal. Avoid alcohol and other medicines that depress the central nervous system. The supplied label extract does not identify specific serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Xyzal if you are allergic to levocetirizine, cetirizine or any of its ingredients, or if you have end-stage kidney disease with a creatinine clearance below 10 mL/min or are undergoing haemodialysis. Children aged 6 months to 11 years with impaired kidney function must not take Xyzal. Impaired kidney function may increase the risk of adverse reactions because Xyzal is largely removed from the body by the kidneys. Avoid driving, operating machinery or other hazardous activities requiring full mental alertness while taking Xyzal. Avoid alcohol and other medicines that depress the central nervous system.
Interactions
Drug interactions have not been studied directly in people taking levocetirizine. Laboratory findings suggest it is unlikely to affect how other medicines are processed by liver enzymes. Interaction studies have been carried out with the related medicine cetirizine, but this label section does not identify specific drug, supplement or food interactions.
