About Voquezna
Overview
Voquezna is a prescription tablet medicine containing vonoprazan, a potassium-competitive acid blocker. It is used in adults to heal erosive esophagitis, maintain healing, and relieve heartburn associated with this condition or non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also used with amoxicillin, with or without clarithromycin, to treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in adults. It works by blocking the final step of acid production in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid released.
What it treats
- Erosive esophagitis in adults: to heal damage to the esophagus, maintain healing and relieve associated heartburn. - Heartburn associated with non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults. - Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in adults, used with amoxicillin, or with amoxicillin and clarithromycin.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects vary by the condition being treated. They include stomach lining inflammation, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, indigestion, constipation, high blood pressure and urinary tract infections. When used to treat H. pylori infection, commonly reported effects also include altered taste, vaginal yeast infection, headache, and inflammation of the nose and throat. Contact a doctor if you develop kidney inflammation, diarrhea associated with Clostridioides difficile infection, or a bone fracture. Stop taking Voquezna and seek medical attention at the first signs of a severe skin reaction or other hypersensitivity reaction. Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency and increase the risk of polyps in the stomach lining. Low magnesium levels can also occur and may lead to low calcium or potassium levels. Your doctor may consider tests for vitamin B12 deficiency or monitoring of magnesium and calcium levels.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Voquezna if you are allergic to vonoprazan or any of its ingredients, or if you take any medicine containing rilpivirine. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, have been reported. If Voquezna is prescribed with clarithromycin or amoxicillin, the contraindications for those antibiotics also apply. Conditions requiring caution include kidney inflammation, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, bone fractures including osteoporosis-related fractures, severe skin reactions, vitamin B12 deficiency, and low magnesium, which may also cause low calcium or potassium. Long-term use may increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency and fundic gland polyps. Magnesium and calcium monitoring may be needed in at-risk patients, including those taking digoxin or medicines that lower magnesium. Stop treatment and seek medical assessment if severe skin reactions or signs of an allergic reaction occur. Kidney inflammation also requires treatment to be stopped and medical evaluation. Improvement in symptoms does not rule out stomach cancer; further assessment may be needed. Voquezna can interfere with chromogranin A testing for neuroendocrine tumors. The label advises stopping it temporarily at least four weeks before this test, under medical guidance.
Interactions
Voquezna can affect how other medicines are absorbed or broken down, and some medicines can reduce its effectiveness. Tell your doctor if you take: • HIV medicines: Voquezna must not be taken with rilpivirine-containing products. Use with atazanavir or nelfinavir should be avoided. Other HIV medicines may also need review. • Iron salts, erlotinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, mycophenolate mofetil, ketoconazole or itraconazole: Voquezna may reduce their absorption and effectiveness. • Clopidogrel: Voquezna may reduce its ability to prevent platelets from clumping. Your doctor may monitor its effectiveness or consider an alternative. • Citalopram or cilostazol: Voquezna may increase exposure to these medicines, so monitoring for side effects may be needed. • Certain medicines broken down by the CYP3A enzyme: Voquezna may increase their levels. Close monitoring may be needed when even small increases could cause serious side effects. • Strong or moderate CYP3A4 inducers: these medicines can reduce Voquezna’s effectiveness, and combined use should be avoided. If Voquezna is used with clarithromycin or amoxicillin, your doctor should also check those antibiotics’ interactions. Some combinations involving clarithromycin can cause serious, potentially fatal heart rhythm problems and must not be used. Voquezna can cause misleading results in chromogranin A blood tests for neuroendocrine tumors and secretin stimulation tests for gastrinoma. Tell the doctor arranging these tests that you take Voquezna. They may need to arrange a treatment pause of at least four weeks before testing.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
