About Ultravist
Overview
Ultravist contains iopromide, an iodinated contrast agent used for diagnostic imaging. It helps doctors examine blood vessels and internal structures during certain X-ray and CT examinations; it is not a treatment for a disease. It works by reducing the passage of X-rays through areas containing the contrast agent, allowing those structures to be seen on the images.
What it treats
Ultravist is a contrast agent used to help show structures during imaging tests, rather than to treat a condition. Its labelled uses include: • Imaging arteries in the brain, limbs, heart and internal organs, the aorta, and the heart’s left ventricle in adults. • Imaging heart chambers and related arteries in children aged 2 years and older. • X-ray examination of the urinary tract in adults and children aged 2 years and older. • Contrast CT scans of the head and body in adults and children aged 2 years and older. • Contrast mammography in adults as an additional examination after mammography and/or ultrasound. The label specifies particular concentrations and presentations for each imaging procedure.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, back pain, chest pain, other pain, an urgent need to urinate, changes in taste, abnormal vision, widening of blood vessels, and reactions where Ultravist is injected or infused, such as pain and swelling. Serious reactions can include life-threatening or fatal allergic reactions, sudden kidney injury or kidney failure, changes in circulation including shock and cardiac arrest, blood clots, severe skin reactions, and thyroid problems in children aged 0 to 3 years. Seek urgent medical attention for a suspected serious reaction. Ultravist can leak from a blood vessel into surrounding tissue, causing inflammation, blistering, skin tissue death, or dangerous pressure within muscles known as compartment syndrome. Contact a doctor if pain, swelling or other symptoms at the injection site worsen.
