About Trental
Overview
Trental contains pentoxifylline, a prescription medicine supplied as extended-release tablets. It treats intermittent claudication caused by long-term blockage of arteries in the limbs and may improve symptoms and function. It works by affecting blood viscosity, or how thick the blood is. It does not replace treatments such as bypass surgery or procedures to remove arterial blockages.

Safety information
Side effects
The more frequently reported side effects in pentoxifylline extended-release tablet studies included indigestion, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and headache. Gas, bloating, belching and tremor were also reported. Contact a doctor promptly for chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, swelling, confusion or seizures. Other serious reports have included low blood pressure, inflammation around the brain and spinal cord without infection, liver inflammation, jaundice, reduced blood cell counts and other blood disorders. Severe allergic reactions, including swelling beneath the skin and life-threatening allergic shock, have also been reported and warrant immediate medical help. Other reported effects include constipation, dry mouth, itching, rash, hives and vision changes. Many effects reported outside the tablet studies, including the rare serious reactions, could not be clearly linked to pentoxifylline.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Trental (pentoxifylline) if you have recently had bleeding in the brain or retina, or if you have previously had an intolerance to pentoxifylline or other methylxanthines, such as caffeine, theophylline or theobromine.
Interactions
Bleeding has been reported with pentoxifylline, both alone and when taken with NSAIDs, anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet medicines. Vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants may have a stronger effect when taken with pentoxifylline. Your doctor should monitor their blood-thinning effect when pentoxifylline is started or its dose is changed. Pentoxifylline can increase theophylline levels and cause theophylline toxicity in some people. Theophylline levels should be monitored when pentoxifylline is started or its dose is changed. Ciprofloxacin, fluvoxamine and other strong CYP1A2 inhibitors may increase pentoxifylline levels. Cimetidine can also increase levels of pentoxifylline and one of its breakdown products. Small falls in blood pressure have been seen when pentoxifylline is taken with nifedipine or captopril. If you take blood pressure medicines, your doctor should check your blood pressure periodically and may need to adjust those medicines.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
