About Toujeo
Overview
Toujeo contains insulin glargine, a long-acting insulin, and comes in a pre-filled pen for injection under the skin. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 6 years and older with diabetes. It works by helping muscle and fat cells take up sugar from the blood and reducing the amount of sugar the liver produces. It is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), allergic reactions, reactions at the injection site, changes in fatty tissue under the skin (lipodystrophy), itching, rash, swelling and weight gain. Serious side effects include severe low blood sugar, severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, and low potassium levels in the blood. These can be life-threatening and require urgent medical attention. Stop using Toujeo if a severe allergic reaction occurs and seek urgent medical help. Fluid retention and heart failure can occur when Toujeo is used with medicines called thiazolidinediones (TZDs). Contact a doctor promptly if signs or symptoms of heart failure occur. Changes to your insulin treatment can cause high or low blood sugar and should be made under close medical supervision with more frequent blood glucose checks. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid medication mix-ups.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Toujeo during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or if you are allergic to insulin glargine or any of its other ingredients. Low blood sugar can be life-threatening. More frequent blood sugar checks may be needed if your insulin treatment, other medicines, meal patterns or physical activity change, or if you have kidney or liver problems or do not notice the warning signs of low blood sugar. Changes to your insulin treatment, injection site or injection method should be made under close medical supervision. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid mix-ups. Never share a pre-filled pen with anyone, even if the needle is changed. Severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions can occur. Stop using Toujeo and seek urgent medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Toujeo can also cause dangerously low potassium levels; people at risk may need potassium monitoring. Taking Toujeo with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure. Monitoring for signs of heart failure is needed, and treatment may need to be changed if it occurs.
Interactions
Some medicines can change how Toujeo affects blood sugar. Your doctor may need to adjust your insulin treatment and recommend more frequent blood sugar checks. Medicines that may increase the risk of low blood sugar include other diabetes medicines, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, pentoxifylline, salicylates, somatostatin analogues such as octreotide, and sulfonamide antibiotics. Medicines that may reduce Toujeo’s blood sugar-lowering effect include certain antipsychotics, corticosteroids, danazol, diuretics, estrogens, progestogens and oral contraceptives, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, protease inhibitors, somatropin, thyroid hormones, and medicines such as albuterol, epinephrine and terbutaline. Alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine and lithium may either increase or decrease Toujeo’s blood sugar-lowering effect. Pentamidine may cause low blood sugar, sometimes followed by high blood sugar. Beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine may reduce or hide the warning signs of low blood sugar. More frequent blood sugar checks may be needed. Discuss these interactions with your doctor.
Using Toujeo
Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
