About Tagamet
Overview
Tagamet is a prescription tablet containing cimetidine. It is used for short-term treatment of active duodenal and non-cancerous stomach ulcers, maintenance treatment after a duodenal ulcer has healed, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with damage to the lining of the food pipe. It also treats conditions involving excessive stomach acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Cimetidine works by blocking the action of histamine at H2 receptors.
What it treats
- Active duodenal ulcers, for short-term treatment. - Maintenance treatment after a duodenal ulcer has healed. - Active benign (non-cancerous) stomach ulcers, for short-term treatment. - Erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), with inflammation and damage to the esophagus confirmed by endoscopy. - Conditions causing excessive stomach acid production, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, systemic mastocytosis and multiple endocrine adenomas.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Tagamet (cimetidine) if you have a known allergy to cimetidine or any ingredient in the tablets.
Interactions
Cimetidine can slow the liver’s breakdown of certain medicines, increasing their blood levels. These include warfarin-type blood thinners, phenytoin, propranolol, nifedipine, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, certain tricyclic antidepressants, lidocaine, theophylline and metronidazole. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines. Warfarin-type blood thinners require close blood-clotting monitoring, and your doctor may need to adjust treatment. Harmful effects have also been reported with phenytoin, lidocaine and theophylline. Anyone taking theophylline needs appropriate monitoring. Your doctor may need to adjust other medicines when you start or stop cimetidine, particularly if you have kidney or liver problems. Cimetidine can also change the absorption of medicines such as ketoconazole by altering acidity. Ask your doctor how to time these medicines in relation to cimetidine.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
