About Sporanox
Overview
Sporanox contains itraconazole, an azole antifungal medicine. It treats blastomycosis and histoplasmosis, and is used for aspergillosis when amphotericin B cannot be tolerated or has not worked. It also treats certain fungal infections of the toenails and fingernails in people whose immune systems are not weakened, after laboratory testing confirms the infection. It works by blocking production of ergosterol, a substance fungi need for their cell membranes.
What it treats
- Blastomycosis affecting the lungs or other parts of the body. - Histoplasmosis, including chronic cavitary lung disease and infection spread through the body without involving the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. - Aspergillosis affecting the lungs or other parts of the body when amphotericin B cannot be tolerated or has not worked. - Dermatophyte fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails in people whose immune systems are not weakened, confirmed by laboratory testing before treatment.
Safety information
Side effects
Rare cases of serious liver damage, including liver failure and death, have been reported with Sporanox. Some occurred in people with no pre-existing liver disease or serious underlying medical condition. If signs or symptoms of liver disease develop, stop treatment and contact your doctor promptly. Liver function testing and a reassessment of treatment are needed.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
