About Spinraza
Overview
Spinraza contains nusinersen, a medicine called an antisense oligonucleotide. It is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in children and adults. It is designed to change how cells process instructions from the SMN2 gene, helping them make more full-length survival motor neuron (SMN) protein.

Side effects
Common side effects reported in patients with infantile-onset spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) include lower respiratory infections, constipation, pneumonia, COVID-19, aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition. In patients with later-onset SMA, common side effects include fever, headache, vomiting and back pain. Serious side effects include low platelet counts and blood-clotting abnormalities, which increase the risk of bleeding, and kidney toxicity. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop bleeding or suspect a serious side effect. Testing for platelet counts, blood clotting and urine protein is required before treatment and before each administration to monitor these risks.
