About Salagen
Overview
Salagen tablets contain pilocarpine hydrochloride, a medicine used to treat dry mouth. They treat dry mouth caused by reduced salivary gland function after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, or associated with Sjögren’s syndrome. Pilocarpine works by activating certain receptors in the body called cholinergic receptors.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Salagen tablets include sweating, more frequent urination, flushing, chills, nausea, runny nose and diarrhea. Headache, indigestion, dizziness, weakness, increased saliva, abdominal pain and vomiting were also reported. Sweating was the most common reason for stopping treatment in studies involving people with Sjögren’s syndrome. Older patients in these studies reported urinary frequency, diarrhea and dizziness more often than younger patients. Contact a doctor promptly if you experience chest pain, a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, fainting, difficulty breathing, an allergic reaction or facial swelling. Rare serious events reported during treatment included heart attack, bleeding in the brain, liver inflammation, inflammation of the pancreas and severe skin reactions involving peeling or blisters. For these rare reports, it is not known whether pilocarpine caused the event.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Salagen if you have uncontrolled asthma, a known allergy to pilocarpine, or a condition in which narrowing of the pupil should be avoided, such as acute iritis (inflammation of the iris) or narrow-angle (angle-closure) glaucoma.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take beta-blockers, as using them with pilocarpine may affect the electrical signals that control your heartbeat. Other medicines with similar effects to pilocarpine (parasympathomimetics) may increase its effects when taken together. Pilocarpine may reduce the effects of anticholinergic medicines, such as atropine and inhaled ipratropium, potentially interfering with their intended benefits. No formal drug interaction studies have been performed.
