About Rilutek
Overview
Rilutek contains the active ingredient riluzole and comes as tablets. It is used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). How riluzole produces its effects in people with ALS is unknown.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include weakness or lack of energy, nausea, dizziness, reduced lung function and abdominal pain. Serious side effects include liver injury, low levels of certain white blood cells (neutropenia), interstitial lung disease and acute inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Contact your doctor if you develop a fever or if any of these serious effects are suspected. The label directs stopping riluzole if there is evidence of liver dysfunction, if interstitial lung disease develops, or promptly if pancreatitis is suspected.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Rilutek (riluzole) if you have had a severe allergic reaction to riluzole or any of its ingredients. Anaphylaxis has occurred. Riluzole can cause liver injury. It is not recommended if liver enzyme levels before treatment are more than five times the upper limit of normal. Treatment must be stopped if there is evidence of liver dysfunction. Report any illness with a fever to your prescriber because of the risk of neutropenia (low levels of a type of white blood cell). Treatment must be stopped if interstitial lung disease develops, or promptly if pancreatitis is suspected. Acute pancreatitis has been reported after marketing. Riluzole may harm an unborn baby, based on animal studies. Discuss its use with your prescriber if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about other medicines you take. Strong to moderate inhibitors of the enzyme CYP1A2 may increase riluzole-related side effects, while strong to moderate inducers of this enzyme may reduce its effectiveness. Taking riluzole with other medicines that can harm the liver may increase the risk of liver damage.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
