About Questran

Overview

Questran is a prescription medicine containing cholestyramine. It is used alongside diet to lower elevated LDL cholesterol in people with primary hypercholesterolemia when diet alone is not enough. It also treats itching associated with partial blockage of the bile ducts. Cholestyramine is a cholesterol-lowering resin that stays in the digestive tract rather than being absorbed into the body.

What it treats

- Elevated LDL cholesterol in primary hypercholesterolemia, alongside dietary treatment when diet alone has not been adequate. It is not indicated when high triglycerides are the main concern. - Itching associated with partial obstruction of the bile ducts.

Safety information

Side effects

Constipation is the most common side effect of Questran and is more likely in people over 60. Less frequent side effects include abdominal discomfort or pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, belching, loss of appetite, fatty stools, rash, and irritation of the skin, tongue or area around the anus. Contact a doctor if constipation persists or becomes severe. Serious reported effects include bleeding linked to vitamin K deficiency, vitamin A or D deficiency, osteoporosis, and excess acid in the blood in children. Rare cases of intestinal blockage have been reported in children, including fatal cases. Seek prompt medical attention for severe abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, black stools, hives, wheezing or shortness of breath. Gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammation of the pancreas and breathing-related reactions have been reported in people taking Questran, although these were not necessarily caused by the medicine. Other reported events with an uncertain link include abnormal liver tests, anaemia, dizziness, headache, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, and urinary changes.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for wheezing or shortness of breath. - Seek immediate medical attention for black stools, rectal bleeding or unusual bleeding. - Seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal pain. - Seek immediate medical attention if you faint.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Questran if you have a complete blockage of the bile ducts that prevents bile from reaching the intestine, or if you are allergic to cholestyramine or any other ingredient in the medicine.

Interactions

Questran may delay or reduce the absorption of other medicines taken by mouth. Tell your doctor if you take warfarin, thiazide diuretics, propranolol, tetracycline, penicillin G, phenobarbital, phenylbutazone, thyroid medicines, estrogens, progestins or digitalis. Ask your doctor how to separate Questran from your other medicines to reduce this interference. If you take digitalis, discuss any plan to stop Questran with your doctor. Stopping it can be hazardous if your digitalis dose was adjusted while you were taking Questran. Questran may also interfere with fat digestion and the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Your doctor may consider vitamin supplements during long-term treatment. Mention any oral phosphate supplements you take; reduced absorption has been observed with another medicine in the same class.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original sachet until you use it, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
