About Provigil

Overview

Provigil contains modafinil, a medicine that promotes wakefulness. It is used to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea or shift work disorder. In obstructive sleep apnea, it treats sleepiness, not the underlying airway obstruction, and does not replace CPAP when that treatment is needed. Exactly how modafinil promotes wakefulness is unknown.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, nervousness, a runny or stuffy nose, diarrhea, back pain, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, dizziness and indigestion. Serious reactions include severe skin rash, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome; angioedema (swelling); anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction); and allergic reactions affecting several organs. Stop taking Provigil at the first sign of a rash unless it is clearly unrelated to the medicine, and contact a doctor immediately. Stop taking it and seek immediate medical help if a serious allergic reaction is suspected. Contact your doctor if mental health symptoms develop. Extra caution is needed in people with a history of psychosis, depression or mania. Heart and circulation problems are also listed as serious risks; people with known cardiovascular disease may need closer monitoring. Sleepiness may persist. Tell your doctor if you remain sleepy, and avoid driving, using machinery or other potentially dangerous activities if you are sleepy.

When to call your doctor

- Any new skin rash: stop taking Provigil and seek medical attention immediately, unless the rash is clearly unrelated to the medicine. - Sudden swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing: stop taking Provigil and seek emergency medical help. - New or worsening mental health symptoms, such as depression, unusually elevated mood or losing touch with reality: contact your doctor immediately.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Provigil if you are allergic to modafinil, armodafinil or any of its inactive ingredients. Use caution if you have a history of psychosis, depression or mania. If psychiatric symptoms develop, your prescriber may consider stopping treatment. People with known cardiovascular disease may need closer monitoring. Based on animal studies, Provigil may harm an unborn baby. Stop taking Provigil at the first sign of a rash unless it is clearly unrelated to the medicine. Serious skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome, can occur. Stop treatment if a severe allergic reaction, including angioedema, anaphylaxis or an allergic reaction affecting multiple organs, is suspected. Sleepiness may persist during treatment and should be assessed regularly. Avoid driving or other potentially dangerous activities if you remain sleepy.

Interactions

Provigil (modafinil) can affect how the body processes certain medicines: - Steroidal contraceptives, such as those containing ethinyl estradiol, may be less effective. Use an alternative or additional contraceptive method while taking Provigil and for one month after stopping it. - Cyclosporine, midazolam and triazolam levels may be reduced. Your doctor may need to adjust treatment and consider monitoring cyclosporine blood levels. - Levels of phenytoin, diazepam, propranolol, omeprazole and clomipramine may increase. Your doctor may need to adjust treatment. - Some tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may reach higher levels in people with low activity of an enzyme called CYP2D6. - If you take warfarin, your doctor may consider more frequent blood-clotting tests (prothrombin time/INR). - Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors require caution when used with Provigil. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.

Using Provigil

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
