Protonix IV

Before taking this medicine

Do not receive Protonix IV if you have a known allergy to pantoprazole, any ingredient in the product, or related medicines called substituted benzimidazoles. Allergic reactions can include anaphylaxis, swelling, breathing difficulties, hives or kidney inflammation. It must not be used with medicines containing rilpivirine. Conditions requiring caution include a tendency toward zinc deficiency, especially if other intravenous products containing EDTA are being used. Pregnancy also requires caution: animal data suggest possible harm to the unborn baby. Other warnings include inflammation and clotting in a vein at the injection site, acute kidney inflammation, severe skin reactions, new or worsening lupus, and raised liver enzymes. Treatment should be stopped and assessed if acute kidney inflammation, severe skin reactions or lupus occurs. Proton pump inhibitors may increase the risk of Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea. Prolonged treatment may cause low magnesium and disturbances in mineral balance. Long-term treatment, particularly with multiple daily doses, may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related hip, wrist or spine fractures. The risk of fundic gland polyps in the stomach increases with long-term use, especially beyond one year. In adults, symptom improvement does not rule out stomach cancer; further assessment or testing may be needed.
