About Protonix
Overview
Protonix contains pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid. It is used for short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis, damage to the lining of the food pipe associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and to maintain healing. It also treats conditions that cause excessive stomach acid production, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by blocking the acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, gas, dizziness and joint pain. In children, common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, headache, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, rash and abdominal pain. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include kidney inflammation, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, severe skin reactions, and new or worsening lupus affecting the skin or other parts of the body. Stop taking pantoprazole and seek medical advice at the first signs of a severe skin reaction or other signs of an allergic reaction. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist or spine, vitamin B12 deficiency, and polyps in the stomach lining. Low magnesium and other mineral disturbances have also been reported rarely with prolonged treatment. Discuss these risks with your doctor.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Protonix (pantoprazole) if you are allergic to pantoprazole, any tablet ingredient, or related medicines called substituted benzimidazoles. Do not take it with any medicine containing rilpivirine. Conditions requiring caution include kidney inflammation, severe skin reactions, new or worsening lupus, and diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile infection. Stop treatment and seek medical evaluation if kidney inflammation, a severe skin reaction, or signs of an allergic reaction occur. New or worsening lupus also requires stopping treatment and specialist evaluation. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist or spine, vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium and other mineral disturbances, and fundic gland polyps. The label advises using treatment for the shortest duration. In adults, improvement in symptoms does not rule out stomach cancer; further follow-up and testing may be needed. Use during pregnancy requires caution because animal studies suggest possible harm to the fetus.
Interactions
Pantoprazole can interact with certain medicines and affect some test results. Raise the following with your doctor: • HIV medicines: Do not take pantoprazole with products containing rilpivirine. Use with nelfinavir should be avoided. Pantoprazole may reduce the effect of atazanavir and increase the risk of side effects from saquinavir. • Warfarin: The combination can increase the risk of serious bleeding. Blood-clotting tests, including INR and prothrombin time, need monitoring. • Methotrexate, particularly high-dose treatment: Pantoprazole may increase methotrexate levels and the risk of toxicity. Your doctor may consider temporarily stopping pantoprazole. • Medicines that need stomach acid for absorption: Pantoprazole may reduce absorption of iron salts, erlotinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, mycophenolate mofetil, ketoconazole and itraconazole. Particular caution is needed in transplant patients taking mycophenolate mofetil. • Clopidogrel: Studies in healthy people found no clinically important effect on clopidogrel’s activity when taken with pantoprazole. Tell your doctor before testing for neuroendocrine tumors. Pantoprazole can raise chromogranin A (CgA) levels and cause false-positive results. Your doctor should arrange a temporary pause in treatment at least 14 days before CgA testing. Pantoprazole may also cause a false-positive urine screening result for THC. A positive result may need confirmation using a different testing method.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
