About Propecia

Overview

Propecia (finasteride) is a tablet used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. It is not indicated for use in women, and its effectiveness for a receding hairline at the temples has not been established. It works by blocking an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, lowering levels of this hormone in the scalp and blood.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include reduced sex drive, difficulty getting or keeping an erection, and ejaculation problems. These were reported in at least 1% of people taking Propecia and more often than with placebo. The label warns of a possible increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer with medicines in this class. Propecia also lowers PSA levels, which are used in prostate assessment. Contact your doctor about any confirmed rise in PSA while taking Propecia, even if the result remains within the normal range for men not taking these medicines, as it may signal prostate cancer.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Propecia if you are allergic to finasteride or any other ingredient. It must not be used by women who are pregnant or could become pregnant because it may cause abnormalities of the external genitals of a male fetus. Propecia is not indicated for women or children. Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Propecia lowers blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Any confirmed rise in PSA during treatment should be evaluated for possible prostate cancer, even if the result remains within the normal range for men not taking this type of medicine. Medicines in this class may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

Storage
