About Prilosec

Overview

Prilosec capsules contain omeprazole, a medicine used to treat acid-related conditions. It treats active duodenal and benign stomach ulcers in adults, as well as heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults and children. It also treats erosive esophagitis and helps maintain its healing, and is used with antibiotics for H. pylori infection in adults with duodenal ulcer disease. Omeprazole works by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces.

What it treats

• Active duodenal ulcers in adults, for short-term treatment. • H. pylori infection associated with duodenal ulcer disease in adults, in combination with clarithromycin, with or without amoxicillin. • Active benign stomach ulcers in adults, for short-term treatment. • Heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults and children. • Erosive esophagitis diagnosed by endoscopy in adults and children, for short-term treatment and maintenance of healing. • Conditions causing excessive stomach acid production in adults, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas and systemic mastocytosis.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects of Prilosec include headache, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and gas. Other reported effects include acid regurgitation, constipation, dizziness, rash and weakness. When taken with clarithromycin, with or without amoxicillin, changes in taste may also occur. Seek emergency medical help for a severe allergic reaction, including swelling or difficulty breathing, or a severe skin reaction such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. These reactions can be life-threatening. Contact a doctor promptly for chest pain, a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, yellowing of the skin or eyes, blood in the urine, unusual bruising or bleeding, vision changes, confusion or hallucinations. Serious reactions reported after Prilosec became available include kidney inflammation, liver damage or failure, inflammation of the pancreas, and blood disorders. Some reported reactions have been fatal. The frequency of these reports is uncertain, and a link to Prilosec cannot always be established. If Prilosec is taken with antibiotics, contact a doctor about diarrhea during or after treatment. Antibiotic-associated inflammation of the colon can range from mild to life-threatening. Amoxicillin can also cause serious, sometimes fatal allergic reactions, particularly in people with a history of penicillin allergy or sensitivity to multiple allergens.

When to call your doctor

- Trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips or tongue: seek emergency help. - A severe rash with blistering or peeling skin: seek immediate medical attention. - Chest pain: seek emergency help. - Yellowing of the skin or eyes: seek immediate medical attention. - Severe or persistent diarrhea, especially when taking amoxicillin or clarithromycin with Prilosec: seek immediate medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Prilosec capsules if you have a known allergy to any ingredient. Allergic reactions may include severe, life-threatening reactions, swelling, narrowing of the airways, kidney inflammation or hives. Improvement in symptoms with omeprazole does not rule out stomach cancer. Thinning of the stomach lining (atrophic gastritis) has occasionally been reported during long-term treatment. If Prilosec is prescribed with amoxicillin, tell your prescriber about any previous allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins or other allergens. Serious and sometimes fatal allergic reactions have occurred with penicillin treatment. If an allergic reaction occurs, stop amoxicillin and seek medical care; a severe reaction requires immediate emergency treatment. Diarrhea after antibiotic treatment may indicate inflammation of the colon caused by Clostridium difficile, which can be life-threatening. If Prilosec is prescribed with clarithromycin, clarithromycin should not be used during pregnancy unless no appropriate alternative is available, because of potential harm to the fetus. Clarithromycin must not be taken with cisapride or pimozide. Taking omeprazole and clarithromycin together can increase blood levels of both medicines and an active breakdown product of clarithromycin.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
