About Prevnar 13
Overview
Prevnar 13 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine supplied in a prefilled syringe. It is used to help prevent invasive disease caused by 13 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children aged 6 weeks through 17 years, and pneumonia and invasive disease caused by these types in adults aged 18 years and older. In children aged 6 weeks through 5 years, it also helps prevent middle ear infections caused by seven of these types; it does not protect against pneumococcal types not included in the vaccine. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies that help the body eliminate the bacteria.
What it treats
- Prevention of invasive disease caused by the 13 pneumococcal types in the vaccine in children aged 6 weeks through 17 years and adults aged 18 years and older. - Prevention of pneumococcal middle ear infections (otitis media) caused by seven of the vaccine’s types in children aged 6 weeks through 5 years. - Prevention of pneumonia caused by the 13 pneumococcal types in the vaccine in adults aged 18 years and older. Prevnar 13 does not protect against pneumococcal types that are not in the vaccine.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in infants, toddlers and children aged 5–17 years include tenderness, redness or swelling at the injection site, irritability, reduced appetite, sleeping more or less than usual, and fever. In adults, common side effects include injection-site pain, redness or swelling, tiredness, headache, muscle or joint pain, reduced appetite, difficulty moving the arm, vomiting, fever, chills and rash. Pauses in breathing (apnea) have been observed in some babies born prematurely after vaccination into a muscle. Seek urgent medical help if your baby has pauses in breathing. For premature babies, the timing of Prevnar 13 vaccination should be based on their medical condition and the potential benefits and risks.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Prevnar 13 must not be given to anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to any of its components or to any vaccine containing diphtheria toxoid. Pauses in breathing (apnea) have been observed after vaccination into a muscle in some infants born prematurely. For these infants, the timing of vaccination should be based on their individual medical condition and the potential benefits and risks. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children younger than 6 weeks.

Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
