Prevacid

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Prevacid if you have a known allergy to lansoprazole or any ingredient in the capsules, or if you take a medicine containing rilpivirine. Serious allergic reactions can include anaphylaxis, swelling, breathing difficulties, hives and kidney inflammation. If Prevacid is prescribed with clarithromycin or amoxicillin, the contraindications for those antibiotics also apply. Conditions and risks requiring caution include: • Kidney inflammation, which requires stopping treatment and medical evaluation. • Severe skin reactions or other signs of allergy, which require stopping treatment at the first signs and medical evaluation. • New or worsening lupus, which requires stopping treatment and specialist evaluation. • An increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. • An increased risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the hip, wrist or spine with long-term use or use several times daily. • Vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term daily use, and rare reports of low magnesium with prolonged treatment. • Stomach fundic gland polyps, with risk increasing during long-term use, especially beyond one year. Treatment should last for the shortest necessary duration. Improvement in stomach symptoms does not rule out stomach cancer in adults; further testing or follow-up may be needed. Prevacid can interfere with tests for neuroendocrine tumors. It may also increase methotrexate levels and the risk of toxicity; the prescriber may temporarily stop Prevacid during high-dose methotrexate treatment. During pregnancy, caution is needed because animal studies suggest possible harmful effects on fetal bone growth and development. Prevacid is not recommended for children younger than one year because of a potential risk of heart valve thickening; benefit for symptomatic GERD has not been demonstrated in this age group.
