Before taking this medicine

Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 30 mL/minute), a blocked bowel or ileus, a hole in the bowel, toxic colitis or toxic megacolon, gastric retention (when stomach contents are retained), or an allergy to any ingredient. Severe kidney impairment can cause magnesium to build up. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney problems, take medicines that affect kidney function or fluid and electrolyte balance, have known or suspected inflammatory bowel disease, or are at risk of inhaling swallowed material into your lungs. Suspected bowel blockage or perforation must be ruled out before use. Fluid loss and changes in blood electrolyte levels can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, seizures or kidney problems. Adequate hydration is important; your prescriber may review your medicines and arrange blood tests before and after use. Fainting has been reported and can cause falls, head injuries or fractures. Bowel lining ulcers may affect the interpretation of colonoscopy findings, particularly in people with known or suspected inflammatory bowel disease. People at risk of inhaling swallowed material into their lungs should be observed while taking the medicine.
