Premarin

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Premarin if you have: • Unexplained abnormal genital bleeding. • Breast cancer or a history of breast cancer, unless you have been specifically selected for treatment of cancer that has spread. • A tumour that depends on estrogen to grow. • A blood clot in a deep vein or the lungs, or a history of either. • A condition caused by a blood clot in an artery, such as a stroke or heart attack, or a history of these conditions. • A previous severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or angioedema (swelling beneath the skin) caused by Premarin. • Liver disease or impaired liver function. • Protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency, or another known disorder that increases blood clotting. Premarin increases the risk of gallbladder disease. Stop taking it and seek medical advice if you develop severely elevated blood calcium, loss of vision, severely elevated triglycerides (blood fats), or jaundice caused by impaired bile flow. If you take thyroid replacement medicine, your thyroid function should be monitored. Estrogens can reduce the quantity and quality of breast milk. An increased risk of probable dementia was reported in women over 65 in the Women’s Health Initiative Memory studies.
