About Pregnyl
Overview
Pregnyl is a prescription injection containing chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta. It is used to induce ovulation and pregnancy in women who have received appropriate gonadotropin treatment and whose lack of ovulation is not caused by primary ovarian failure. It also treats selected cases of reduced testicular function caused by pituitary hormone deficiency in males, and undescended testicles before puberty when there is no physical obstruction. The hormone helps trigger egg release and may encourage testicles to descend, although testicular descent is often temporary.
What it treats
- Undescended testicles before puberty when there is no anatomical blockage. - Selected cases of reduced testicular function caused by a pituitary hormone deficiency in males. - Infertility in women who do not ovulate, when this is not due to primary ovarian failure and they have received appropriate treatment with human gonadotropins, to induce ovulation and pregnancy.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include headache, irritability, restlessness, depression, fatigue, fluid-related swelling, and bruising, pain, redness, swelling or itching at the injection site. Women may also have breast pain. In men, water and salt retention, breast enlargement and early puberty have been reported. Serious side effects that warrant prompt medical attention include: • Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Reactions may affect the injection site or the whole body; widespread rash or fever can occur rarely. Stop Pregnyl and contact a doctor immediately if an allergic reaction is suspected. • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women, which can be mild or severe. Mild OHSS may involve abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, enlarged ovaries and ovarian cysts. Severe OHSS can involve large ovarian cysts that may rupture, fluid accumulation in the abdomen or around the lungs, and weight gain. Contact a doctor promptly if these symptoms occur. • Blood clots have rarely been associated with combined FSH/hCG treatment, usually alongside severe OHSS. These require urgent medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Pregnyl if you have: • Had an allergic reaction to human gonadotropins, including hCG, or any ingredient in this medicine. • High blood levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) indicating primary ovarian failure. • An uncontrolled thyroid, adrenal or pituitary disorder. • A tumour of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland; an ovarian, breast or uterine tumour in women; or a breast or prostate tumour in men. • Reproductive organ abnormalities or uterine fibroids that make pregnancy incompatible. • Abnormal vaginal bleeding with no known cause.

Dosing

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
