About Pneumovax 23
Overview
Pneumovax 23 is a vaccine containing purified sugars from the outer coating of 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. It is used to help prevent pneumococcal disease caused by those types in adults aged 50 years and older, and in people aged 2 years and older who are at increased risk. It works by stimulating antibodies that help immune cells recognize and destroy these bacteria.
What it treats
Pneumovax 23 is used to help prevent pneumococcal disease caused by the 23 serotypes included in the vaccine, in adults aged 50 years or older and people aged 2 years or older who are at increased risk of pneumococcal disease.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include pain, soreness or tenderness at the injection site, swelling or hardening at the injection site, redness, headache, weakness or tiredness, and muscle pain. A reaction affecting the whole body may pose a significant risk for people with severely impaired heart or lung function. If you have these conditions and develop a whole-body reaction after vaccination, contact your doctor for appropriate care.
Before taking this medicine
Do not receive Pneumovax 23 if you have had a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to any of its components. Special caution and appropriate medical care are needed if you have severely impaired heart or lung function, because a reaction affecting the whole body could pose a significant risk. Pneumovax 23 is not approved for children younger than 2 years because they do not develop an effective immune response to the vaccine. People with weakened immune systems may have a reduced response. Routine repeat vaccination is not recommended for people with normal immune function who have previously received a 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine. In a clinical study, adults aged 65 or older had more vaccine-related reactions affecting the whole body after repeat vaccination than after their first vaccination.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you are due to receive ZOSTAVAX. In a clinical study, giving it at the same time as Pneumovax 23 reduced the immune response to ZOSTAVAX compared with giving the vaccines separately. Ask your doctor about separating the vaccinations.
Using Pneumovax 23
Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
