About Plavix

Overview

Plavix (clopidogrel) is an antiplatelet medicine supplied as film-coated tablets. It is used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome, including unstable angina or a heart attack. It is also used in people who have had a recent heart attack or stroke, or who have established peripheral arterial disease. It works by blocking a receptor on platelets, making them less able to become activated and stick together.

What it treats

- Acute coronary syndrome, including unstable angina and heart attacks with or without ST-segment elevation, to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. - Recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease, to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Safety information

Side effects

Bleeding is the most commonly reported side effect of Plavix. It can be serious, life-threatening or fatal. Seek immediate medical attention for serious bleeding. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a serious blood disorder, has also been reported and requires urgent medical attention. Cross-reactions with other medicines in the same group (thienopyridines) have been reported.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for severe bleeding, which can be life-threatening.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Plavix if you have active bleeding, such as a bleeding stomach ulcer or bleeding inside the skull, or if you are allergic to clopidogrel or any other ingredient in the product. Plavix increases the risk of bleeding. Tell your prescriber if you are due to have surgery. The label advises stopping Plavix 5 days before planned surgery with a major bleeding risk, but do not stop it without medical advice: stopping early increases the risk of cardiovascular events. Avoid taking Plavix with omeprazole or esomeprazole. Tell your prescriber if you have had an allergic reaction to another thienopyridine medicine, as cross-reactions have been reported. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a blood disorder, has also been reported with Plavix.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following with Plavix: • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), warfarin, SSRI or SNRI antidepressants, or other antiplatelet medicines: these increase the risk of bleeding. • Opioid pain medicines: these can reduce your exposure to clopidogrel. Your doctor may consider an antiplatelet medicine given by injection or infusion. • Medicines that increase the activity of the liver enzyme CYP2C19: these increase levels of clopidogrel’s active metabolite and its effect on platelets. • Repaglinide: clopidogrel increases its level in the blood.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
