Before taking this medicine

Do not take Pico-Salax if you have: • Severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 30 mL/minute), because magnesium may build up in the body. • A blockage in the digestive tract or ileus (when the bowel stops moving normally). • A hole or tear in the bowel. • Toxic colitis or toxic megacolon. • Gastric retention (when stomach contents do not empty normally). • An allergy to any of its ingredients. A suspected bowel blockage or perforation must be ruled out before use. Extra caution is needed if you have kidney impairment or take medicines that affect kidney function. Fluid and electrolyte disturbances can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, seizures or kidney problems. Adequate hydration is important, and your clinician may review your medicines and arrange blood tests before and after use. Fainting has been reported and can cause falls, head injuries and fractures. The medicine may also cause ulcers in the bowel lining, which should be considered when interpreting colonoscopy findings in people with known or suspected inflammatory bowel disease. People at risk of inhaling swallowed material into their airways need observation during administration.
