About Pepcid
Overview
Pepcid contains famotidine, a histamine-2 (H2) receptor blocker. It is used in adults and children weighing at least 40 kg to treat active stomach or duodenal ulcers, symptomatic acid reflux without erosion, and biopsy-confirmed erosive inflammation of the oesophagus caused by reflux. In adults, it is also used to treat conditions that cause excessive stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcers returning. It works by blocking H2 receptors in the stomach, reducing the amount and acidity of stomach secretions.
What it treats
For adults and children weighing at least 40 kg: • Active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the first part of the small intestine). • Active stomach ulcers. • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with symptoms but no erosion of the esophagus. • Erosive esophagitis caused by GERD, confirmed by biopsy. For adults only: • Conditions that cause excessive stomach acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasias. • Reducing the risk of duodenal ulcers returning.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, constipation and diarrhea. Central nervous system reactions can also occur. Contact your doctor if you experience these reactions. Older adults and people with impaired kidney function are at increased risk.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Pepcid if you have had a serious allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to famotidine or another histamine-2 (H2) receptor blocker. Older adults and people with impaired kidney function need extra caution because they are at increased risk of side effects affecting the central nervous system. Moderate or severe kidney impairment also increases the risk of QT prolongation, a change in the heart’s electrical activity. The prescriber may need to adjust treatment, and kidney function should be monitored in older adults. The absence of digestive symptoms does not rule out stomach cancer. Assessment for stomach cancer is needed before starting treatment.
Interactions
Pepcid can reduce the absorption of medicines that depend on stomach acidity, which may make them less effective. Ask your doctor to check whether this applies to any of your medicines. Taking Pepcid with tizanidine may substantially increase tizanidine levels in the blood, causing low blood pressure, a slow heart rate or excessive drowsiness. This combination should be avoided if possible; tell your doctor if you take tizanidine.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
