Ozempic

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Ozempic if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any other ingredient in Ozempic. Semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents; whether it causes these tumours in humans is unknown. Report a neck lump, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or persistent hoarseness to your healthcare professional. Ozempic is not recommended for people with severe gastroparesis (severely delayed stomach emptying). Other conditions requiring caution include: • Diabetic retinopathy: existing diabetes-related eye disease should be monitored for worsening. • Use of insulin or medicines that stimulate insulin release, such as sulfonylureas: the risk of low blood sugar, including severe episodes, is increased. • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea causing dehydration: this can lead to acute kidney injury, and kidney function may need monitoring. • Previous serious allergic reactions to another GLP-1 receptor agonist: caution is needed because the risk of a similar reaction with Ozempic is unknown. Stop using Ozempic and seek prompt medical care if pancreatitis or a serious allergic reaction is suspected. Pancreatitis may cause persistent or severe abdominal pain, sometimes spreading to the back, with or without nausea or vomiting. Suspected gallstones or gallbladder inflammation require assessment. Tell your healthcare team about any planned surgery or procedure. Aspiration of stomach contents into the lungs has been reported during general anaesthesia or deep sedation in people receiving GLP-1 receptor agonists. Ozempic should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Never share an Ozempic pen, even if the needle is changed, because this can transmit blood-borne infections.
