About Otezla

Overview

Otezla (apremilast) is a prescription tablet used in adults to treat active psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis in people who are candidates for light therapy or systemic treatment, and mouth ulcers associated with Behçet’s disease. It is also used in children aged 6 years and older who weigh at least 20 kg for active psoriatic arthritis or moderate to severe plaque psoriasis when light therapy or systemic treatment is appropriate. It blocks an enzyme called PDE4, increasing levels of a chemical messenger inside cells, although exactly how this produces its treatment effects is not fully understood.

What it treats

- Active psoriatic arthritis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who weigh at least 20 kg. - Plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for light therapy or treatment that acts throughout the body. - Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in children aged 6 years and older who weigh at least 20 kg and are candidates for light therapy or treatment that acts throughout the body. - Mouth ulcers associated with Behçet’s disease in adults.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects of Otezla (apremilast) include diarrhea, nausea and headache. Upper respiratory tract infections are also common in people treated for plaque psoriasis or Behçet’s disease. Headaches may include tension headaches in people treated for plaque psoriasis. Serious side effects include: • Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling). Stop taking Otezla and seek immediate medical help if signs of a serious allergic reaction develop. • Severe diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Contact your doctor if these occur; your prescriber may need to adjust or pause treatment. • New or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or other mood changes. Contact your healthcare provider if you or your caregivers notice these changes. • Unexplained or significant weight loss. Monitor your weight regularly and contact your doctor if this occurs; treatment may need to be stopped.

When to call your doctor

- Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing. - Severe diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. - New or worsening depression, thoughts of suicide or other mood changes. - Unexplained or significant weight loss.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Otezla if you have a known allergy to apremilast or any of its other ingredients. Serious allergic reactions, including angioedema (swelling) and anaphylaxis, have been reported. Stop taking Otezla and seek urgent medical help if signs of a serious allergic reaction develop. Tell your prescriber if you have a history of depression, suicidal thoughts or suicidal behaviour. Contact your healthcare provider if depression develops or worsens, or if suicidal thoughts or other mood changes occur. Severe diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting may require your prescriber to reduce or temporarily stop treatment. Weight should be monitored regularly; unexplained or significant weight loss should be assessed and may require stopping treatment. Severe kidney impairment requires a dosage adjustment by your prescriber. Taking Otezla with strong enzyme-inducing medicines, such as rifampin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine or phenytoin, is not recommended because they may reduce its effectiveness.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
