Before taking this medicine

Do not use NuvaRing if you: • Are over 35 and smoke. • Have a high risk of blood clots, including a current or past deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, an inherited or acquired clotting disorder, disease affecting blood vessels in the brain, coronary artery disease, or heart valve or rhythm disorders that increase clot risk. • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes with blood vessel disease. • Have headaches with specific neurological symptoms, migraine with aura, or any migraine if you are over 35. • Have liver disease or liver tumors, whether benign or cancerous. • Have unexplained abnormal uterine bleeding. • Are pregnant. • Have or have previously had breast cancer. • Are allergic to any component of NuvaRing, including a history of anaphylaxis or angioedema caused by a component. • Take hepatitis C medicines containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir, because liver enzyme levels may rise. NuvaRing is not recommended while breastfeeding because it can reduce milk production. Discuss planned major surgery or recent childbirth with your prescriber, as these affect when NuvaRing can be used. Blood pressure should be monitored if you have well-controlled high blood pressure. Prediabetes and diabetes also require monitoring. If blood fat levels are not controlled, an alternative contraceptive method should be considered. Significant changes in headaches, irregular bleeding or missed periods need medical assessment. Stop using NuvaRing if a blood clot occurs or jaundice develops. A significant rise in blood pressure also requires stopping use. Suspected toxic shock syndrome requires prompt medical evaluation and treatment.
