About Nexlizet
Overview
Nexlizet is a tablet containing bempedoic acid and ezetimibe. It is used alongside diet and exercise to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults with high cholesterol, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition. It works by reducing cholesterol production in the liver and cholesterol absorption in the intestine.
What it treats
- High LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), alongside diet and exercise. - Bempedoic acid, one component of Nexlizet, is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke or coronary revascularization in adults at increased risk who cannot take recommended statin therapy, including those not taking a statin.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, muscle spasms, raised uric acid levels, back pain, stomach pain or discomfort, bronchitis, pain in the arms or legs, anemia, raised liver enzymes, diarrhea, joint pain, sinusitis, tiredness and flu. In a cardiovascular outcomes trial of bempedoic acid, common side effects also included reduced kidney function, gout and gallstones. Serious side effects include raised uric acid levels and tendon rupture. Contact your doctor about signs or symptoms of high uric acid or gout. Your doctor may check your uric acid levels and prescribe treatment if needed. Stop taking Nexlizet and contact your doctor at the first sign of tendon rupture. Nexlizet should be avoided if you have a history of tendon disorders or tendon rupture.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Nexlizet if you have had an allergic reaction to bempedoic acid, ezetimibe or any other ingredient in the medicine. Serious allergic reactions have been reported, including anaphylaxis, swelling, rash and hives. Avoid Nexlizet if you have a history of tendon disorders or tendon rupture. Stop taking it at the first sign of tendon rupture. Nexlizet can raise blood uric acid levels. Your clinician may check these levels, monitor for symptoms and prescribe treatment if needed. Nexlizet may harm an unborn baby. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take simvastatin, pravastatin, cyclosporine, fibrates or cholestyramine. Nexlizet can increase levels of simvastatin and pravastatin, raising the risk of muscle damage. Restrictions apply to their use with Nexlizet; your prescriber should review your statin treatment. Taking Nexlizet with cyclosporine can increase levels of both cyclosporine and ezetimibe. The increase in ezetimibe exposure may be greater in people with severe kidney impairment. Your doctor should monitor cyclosporine levels and weigh the benefits and risks of using them together. Fenofibrate used with Nexlizet may increase the risk of gallstones. Suspected gallstones require gallbladder assessment, and your doctor may consider a different cholesterol-lowering treatment. Other fibrates are not recommended with Nexlizet. Fibrates taken with Nexlizet may also increase triglycerides and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol. These levels should be checked four weeks after starting the combination and periodically afterwards. Your doctor may stop one of the medicines if these changes occur and continue monitoring until levels return to baseline. Cholestyramine can reduce ezetimibe levels and make Nexlizet less effective. Nexlizet needs to be taken separately from bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine; ask your prescriber about timing.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
