About Mycamine
Overview
Mycamine (micafungin) is an antifungal medicine supplied in a vial for intravenous infusion. In adults and children aged 4 months and older, it treats Candida infections of the bloodstream, esophagus and abdominal lining, as well as widespread Candida infections and abscesses. It also helps prevent Candida infections in patients in this age group undergoing a blood-forming stem cell transplant. It works by blocking production of a key component of the fungal cell wall.
What it treats
- Candida infections of the bloodstream, infections that spread throughout the body, infection of the abdominal lining (peritonitis), and Candida abscesses in adults and children. In infants younger than 4 months, use is limited to infections without spread to the brain and its surrounding membranes or the eyes. - Candida infection of the oesophagus in adults and children aged 4 months and older. - Prevention of Candida infections in adults and children aged 4 months and older undergoing a blood-forming stem cell transplant.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, headache, low platelet counts and low neutrophil counts (a type of white blood cell). In babies younger than 4 months, additional common reactions include sepsis, excess acid in the blood, anemia, reduced blood oxygen levels and low potassium. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and shock; breakdown of red blood cells; liver inflammation, impairment or failure; and kidney impairment or acute kidney failure. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction, and contact a doctor promptly about other serious reactions. Blood tests may be needed to monitor blood cell breakdown, liver function and kidney function. Infusion or injection-site reactions can also occur, including rash, itching, facial swelling and widening of blood vessels. Tell the healthcare professional administering Mycamine immediately if these occur.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Mycamine if you have a known allergy to micafungin, any ingredient in Mycamine, or other echinocandin antifungal medicines. Mycamine can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and shock. Treatment must be stopped if these occur. Blood cell breakdown and related anaemia have also been reported; severe cases require stopping treatment. Liver problems, including hepatitis and liver failure, and kidney problems, including acute kidney failure, have been reported. Liver and kidney function should be monitored. Treatment must be stopped if severe liver dysfunction occurs. Infusion-related and injection-site reactions can occur, including rash, itching, facial swelling and widening of blood vessels. The infusion should be monitored closely and may need to be slowed. If you are pregnant, discuss the risk with your prescriber. Based on animal studies, Mycamine may harm the unborn baby.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take sirolimus, itraconazole or nifedipine. During treatment with Mycamine, your doctor should monitor for toxic effects from these medicines and may need to reduce their doses.

Storage
