About Movantik

Overview

Movantik (naloxegol) is a prescription medicine used to treat constipation caused by opioid pain medicines in adults with chronic non-cancer pain. This includes adults with chronic pain related to previous cancer or its treatment who do not need frequent increases in their opioid dose. It works by blocking the effects of opioids in the gut, helping reduce the constipation they cause.

Side effects

Common side effects of Movantik include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, gas, vomiting and headache. Serious side effects include opioid withdrawal, severe abdominal pain or diarrhea, and gastrointestinal perforation (a hole in the stomach or intestinal wall). Contact your doctor if you develop symptoms of opioid withdrawal. Stop taking Movantik and contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe diarrhea or severe, persistent or worsening abdominal pain.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Movantik if you have a known or suspected blockage in your stomach or intestines, are at risk of a recurring blockage, or have had a serious or severe allergic reaction to Movantik or any of its ingredients. Do not take it with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as clarithromycin or ketoconazole, as these can increase naloxegol exposure and trigger opioid withdrawal. Movantik should be avoided in severe liver impairment. Extra caution is needed if you have damage to the lining of your digestive tract, because of the risk of a tear or hole, or a disrupted blood-brain barrier, which may increase the risk of opioid withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms may include sweating, chills, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anxiety, irritability and yawning. Stop taking Movantik and seek medical advice if you develop severe diarrhea or severe, persistent or worsening abdominal pain. Movantik may trigger opioid withdrawal in pregnant women and the fetus. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take diltiazem, erythromycin or verapamil. These medicines can increase naloxegol levels, so use together should be avoided. If combined treatment is unavoidable, your prescriber will need to adjust your dose and monitor for side effects. Rifampin and other strong CYP3A4 inducers can lower naloxegol levels; use together is not recommended. Avoid taking Movantik with other opioid antagonists, as their combined effects can increase the risk of opioid withdrawal.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
