About Motegrity

Overview

Motegrity is a prescription medicine containing prucalopride, available as film-coated tablets. It treats chronic idiopathic constipation in adults, meaning long-lasting constipation with no known cause. It works by activating serotonin type 4 (5-HT4) receptors, which stimulate muscle contractions in the colon to help move bowel contents along.

Side effects

Common side effects of Motegrity include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, dizziness, vomiting, gas and fatigue. Serious concerns include suicidal thoughts or behavior, thoughts of self-harm, and new or worsening depression. Stop taking Motegrity immediately and contact your healthcare provider if you notice any unusual changes in mood or behavior, including new or worsening depression, thoughts of self-harm, or suicidal thoughts or behavior.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Motegrity if you have: • A history of an allergic reaction to Motegrity. Reported reactions include difficulty breathing, rash, itching, hives and facial swelling. • A hole or blockage in the intestine, including obstructive ileus. • Severe inflammatory conditions of the intestine, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon or megarectum. Watch for new or worsening depression, thoughts of self-harm or suicide, and suicidal behavior. Stop taking Motegrity immediately and contact your healthcare provider if you notice unusual changes in mood or behavior, or develop suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
